The Ubuntu 24.04 Beta Delayed Due to XZ Nightmare

The beta release of Ubuntu 24.04 will not be launched tomorrow as planned but has been postponed by one week due to security nightmares with XZ and a desire to rebuild packages out of an abundance of caution.

Canonical has decided to rebuild all binary packages for Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) after compromised XZ code was found within the xz-utils package. While there's no indication that other packages have been compromised as a result of this, as a precautionary measure, they are rebuilding all binaries in their build after compiling the hazardous XZ package.

Due to the time required for the package rebuild, the Ubuntu 24.04 beta has been postponed from April 4th to April 11th. The announcement of the delay for Ubuntu 24.04 Beta was posted today on the Ubuntu Discourse. The official release date for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on April 25th appears to remain on schedule.
