Debian 12.7 released with Security Updates and Improvements

The Debian Project has just announced the release of Debian 12.7, the latest update to the "Bookworm" series. This release focuses primarily on bug fixes and security patches.

For users who regularly update their systems through security.debian.org, this release might not require many changes as it includes most of the latest security updates. However, there is one notable change – the inclusion of Shim 15.8, a simple software package designed to work as the first-stage bootloader on UEFI systems. This might affect users who dual-boot with other operating systems.

The release revokes signatures from old versions of Shim present in UEFI firmware, potentially affecting the system's ability to boot under Secure Boot. Affected users can temporarily disable Secure Boot to update their systems as needed.

Furthermore, significant improvements have been made to the "amd64-microcode" and "intel-microcode" packages to address recent security vulnerabilities.

Debian 12.7 also includes updates for Ansible and Apache2 to enhance security against key leakage and content disclosure.

Beyond security fixes, the release also refines various other components. For example, Calibre has been patched to prevent remote code execution and cross-site scripting attacks. The systemd package has also been updated to improve hardware compatibility, and various under-the-hood adjustments have been made to enhance system performance and reliability.

It's worth noting that Debian 12.7 does not introduce a new version of the "Bookworm" release; it only fixes bugs and security issues across several packages. If you are already running it, run the following command to get your system to the latest stable version:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

The release announcement provides in-depth information about all changes. A complete list of all updated packages is available [here].

Updates for Debian 11 "Bullseye" (oldstable)

Besides the "Bookworm" series, if you are still using Debian 11 "Bullseye", which is now labeled "oldstable", you should know that it also received an update to v11.11.

This update fixes 50 bugs and includes 27 security updates for various software, including Plasma Desktop, Firefox ESR, LibreOffice, Exim, OpenJDK, FFmpeg, PostgreSQL, NVIDIA, libvirt, and others. Consider upgrading to Debian 11.11 as soon as possible to maintain your system's stability.
