How to Add, Resize and Adjust Widget on iPhone (iOS 18)

The iPhone's home screen has evolved beyond just app icons, embracing interactive widgets that offer a glimpse of information at a glance. These little windows into your apps allow you to take quick actions without even opening them, making your daily interactions with your phone smoother and more efficient. This guide delves into the world of iPhone widgets, showing you how to add, customize, and remove them to create a truly personalized home screen experience.

Adding Widgets to Your Home Screen

Widgets can be added to the lock screen, home screen, or the Today view, accessible by swiping left from the home screen. To begin, press and hold on an empty area of your home screen until the icons start jiggling. Tap the "Edit" button in the top left corner and select "Add Widget" from the menu.

A widget gallery will slide up from the bottom, showcasing featured widgets at the top. Scroll down to browse through a list of apps that offer their own widgets, or use the search bar to quickly find a specific widget.

Once you've selected a widget, swipe left or right to choose from different sizes and versions. Typically, widgets come in small, medium, and large sizes, each displaying a varying amount of information.

To add the widget, tap "Add Widget" at the bottom. The selected widget will instantly appear on your home screen. While the icons are still jiggling, you can drag the widget to your desired location. When you're happy with its placement, tap "Done" in the top right corner to exit the editing mode.

Alternatively, you can tap and hold the widget preview to pick it up and drag it to any page or part of a page. Other icons and widgets will automatically rearrange themselves to accommodate the newcomer.

Resizing and Adjusting Widgets

To resize a widget, touch and hold it until a contextual menu appears. Use the sizing icons to switch between available sizes. Widgets can be resized even when not in editing mode by tapping and holding them. The ability to customize widget sizes allows you to tailor their appearance to your preferences and screen space.

Stacking Widgets for Space-Saving Efficiency

To conserve space on your home screen, you can stack multiple widgets on top of each other. This is similar to creating folders for apps. To create a stack, simply drag one widget atop another. You can then flip through the widgets in the stack by swiping vertically. The dots on the edge of the stack indicate the number of widgets it contains, while the name of the currently displayed widget is shown below the stack.

You can even create a stack with multiple widgets from the same app, each displaying different information. For example, you could have a weather widget stack with separate widgets showing the forecast for different cities. This can streamline your information flow and reduce clutter on your home screen.

Smart Stacks: Personalized Widget Rotation

For a truly dynamic and adaptive home screen, you can utilize the Smart Stack feature. This allows iOS to automatically display the most relevant widget based on your location, activity, time, and other factors. To create a Smart Stack, select "Smart Stack" from the top of the app list in the widget gallery.

You can manually swipe through the widgets in a Smart Stack, but iOS will continuously rotate them based on its assessment of your needs. To transform a standard stack into a Smart Stack, touch and hold the stack and choose "Edit Stack." Toggle "Widget Suggestions" at the bottom to enable Smart Stack functionality.

Customizing Widget Content

Many widgets offer customization options, allowing you to tailor the information they display. To adjust a widget, press and hold it and select "Edit Widget." Alternatively, if you're in editing mode, simply tap the widget. This will reveal a list of available options.

The customization options vary depending on the widget. For example, the Reminders widget allows you to switch to a different list. Once you've made your changes, simply swipe up from the home screen or tap outside the widget to exit the customization mode.

Removing Widgets from Your Home Screen

You can remove any widget you've added to your home screen. To remove a widget, touch and hold it and select "Remove Widget" from the menu. Confirm your action by choosing "Remove."

Alternatively, when in editing mode, tap the minus ("-") icon in the top left corner of the widget and choose "Remove."

To remove individual widgets from a stack, touch and hold the stack and select "Edit Stack." Swipe to the widget you want to remove and tap the minus icon in the top left corner of the widget. Choose "Remove" to confirm, then tap "Done" to save your changes.

To remove an entire stack, select "Remove Stack" and then "Remove."

Embracing the Power of Widgets

While iPhone widgets may seem like a small detail, they offer a significant enhancement to your user experience. By incorporating widgets into your home screen, you can gain quick access to important information and actions, streamlining your phone usage and enhancing productivity.

Experiment with different widgets and customize them to suit your needs. Whether you're seeking a glimpse of the weather, a reminder of upcoming events, or control over your smart home devices, widgets provide a convenient and intuitive way to interact with your iPhone. As you discover the potential of widgets, you'll find yourself relying on them more and more, transforming your home screen into a truly personalized and efficient hub for your daily activities.
