KDE Framework 6.6 is Released: Cross-Desktop Thumbnail Generator, New Breeze Icons, Qt 6.8 and more

The KDE Project continues to push the boundaries of innovation with the release of KDE Frameworks 6.6. This latest iteration of the collection of over 70 add-on libraries for Qt brings significant improvements to the Plasma desktop environment and KDE applications, with a focus on user experience and integration.

One of the standout features in this release is the implementation of support for cross-desktop thumbnail generators. This means that KDE users will now be able to enjoy thumbnails generated by third-party applications, like the STL file thumbnailer, in the Dolphin file manager.

“On Linux systems, many applications ship with thumbnailer files that tell file managers how to create thumbnails of their files,” explains developer Akseli Lahtinen. “This functionality is already used by other file managers like Nautilus and Thunar, so we felt it was important to join the party.” This feature enhances the visual appeal of Dolphin and allows users to quickly identify different file types, making file management smoother and more intuitive.

Beyond the thumbnail revolution, KDE Frameworks 6.6 brings several other noteworthy improvements and refinements:

  • A new Breeze icon for Applet Wallet bundle files: This update offers a more visually appealing and cohesive representation of Applet Wallet files within the KDE ecosystem.

  • New icons for dialog windows: The dialog windows across KDE applications have been given a fresh look with updated icons that better align with the Breeze design language.

  • Qt 6.8 support: This update ensures that KDE applications running on Qt 6.8 will benefit from improved icon rendering, eliminating blurriness when using screen scaling.

  • Streamlined drop menus: KDE Frameworks 6.6 introduces improved drop menus with more relevant actions, making it easier for users to quickly interact with files and images.

  • Enhanced image dragging: The experience of dragging images and files from web browsers to the Plasma desktop or Dolphin has been improved with better text and icons for a more intuitive and seamless interaction.

But the improvements don't stop there. KDE Frameworks 6.6 addresses several issues that users have encountered in previous versions:

  • "Small font" setting issue: The "Small font" setting in the System Settings Fonts page has been corrected to ensure proper rendering across all applications.

  • Improper icon coloring: An issue causing symbolic icons to be colored incorrectly in Plasma panels when using mixed light/dark global themes has been addressed.

  • Broken "Restore" functionality: The "Restore" functionality for trashed files and folders has been restored, allowing users to easily recover data.

Additionally, KDE Frameworks 6.6 includes workarounds for several bugs:

  • Broken Touchpad page: The issue affecting the Touchpad page and other System Settings pages, where they would break after accessing another page, has been addressed.

  • System Settings crash: A bug causing System Settings to crash when opening a "Get New [thing]" window and then closing System Settings has been resolved.

  • KDE Connect file sharing: The issue preventing users from sharing files to their devices via KDE Connect has been fixed.

KDE Frameworks 6.6 is a testament to the continuous improvement and dedication to user experience that drives the KDE Project. With a plethora of bug fixes, enhanced functionalities, and a focus on visual harmony, this release offers a smoother and more enjoyable experience for users of the Plasma desktop environment and KDE applications.

Keep an eye out for the KDE Frameworks 6.6 packages in your GNU/Linux distribution's stable software repositories and update your installation as soon as possible. This is a release that truly makes a difference in the everyday user experience.

But the improvements don't stop here. This is just the beginning! The KDE Project is constantly working on new and exciting features, so stay tuned for even more exciting developments in the future.
