Raspberry Pi Foundation launching Code Club

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is excited to unveil a refreshed Code Club, boasting a new look and a bold ambition to inspire 10 million more young people to embrace the world of technology over the next decade.

Since its inception in the UK in 2012, Code Club has blossomed into a global movement, empowering over 2 million young individuals to become creators in the digital realm. They've learned to build their own apps, games, animations, websites, and so much more.

Independent evaluations have consistently highlighted the positive impact of Code Club, demonstrating its effectiveness in nurturing programming skills and fostering broader life skills such as confidence, resilience, problem-solving, and communication. This success can be attributed to the supportive learning environments created by dedicated teachers and volunteers. These environments encourage independent and collaborative learning, particularly benefiting young people who may struggle in traditional classroom settings.

Crucially, Code Club fosters inclusivity, inspiring young people from diverse backgrounds, including girls and those underrepresented in the technology sector.

Embracing Flexibility and Inclusivity

While proud of the impact already achieved, the Raspberry Pi Foundation aims to expand its reach, aiming to empower 10 million more young people over the next decade. To achieve this ambitious goal, the organization embarked on a journey of listening, engaging with parents, teachers, and young people who hadn't yet experienced Code Club.

The insights gained from these conversations have led to significant changes, designed to make it easier for educators and volunteers around the world to establish and run Code Clubs. The foundation is moving towards a more flexible model, adaptable to local contexts and cultures.

This means:

  • Location Flexibility: Code Clubs can be hosted in schools, libraries, makerspaces, or any suitable community venue.

  • Customized Scheduling: Clubs can tailor their meeting frequency and age ranges to suit their specific settings.

  • Activity Tailoring: Clubs can personalize activities to match the interests and abilities of their participants.

  • Name Flexibility: Clubs are no longer required to be called 'Code Club' to be officially recognized and receive support from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

To further support this transition, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has introduced a Code Club Charter. This charter outlines shared principles for all Code Clubs, highlighting the organization's commitment to supporting club leaders and mentors.

The new Code Club website provides streamlined access to resources for setting up and running a club, including an updated and simplified club leader guide. A new online course offering guidance on successful club management will be launched shortly, alongside an expanding program of online community calls, webinars, and training.

Project-Based Learning for Meaningful Outcomes

A cornerstone of Code Club's support is its collection of projects, designed to empower young people to bring their ideas to life using a wide range of hardware and software. Created by experienced educators and rigorously tested, these projects are translated into numerous languages, ensuring meaningful and lasting learning outcomes. Importantly, these projects facilitate independent learning, meaning mentors don't require technical expertise.

The Integration of CoderDojo

The Raspberry Pi Foundation also supports CoderDojo, another coding club network that originated in Cork, Ireland in 2011. To streamline resources and support for all coding clubs, the foundation has decided to unify resources and support for both Code Club and CoderDojo under the new Code Club website.

Existing CoderDojos can maintain their identity and operational practices. They will continue to manage their clubs through the new website and access all available resources and support. New clubs can register as CoderDojos.

The foundation acknowledges the significant contributions of the CoderDojo community, ensuring that its values are reflected in the Code Club Charter and that resources address its specific needs. CoderDojos will continue to be an integral part of the broader coding club community, and the Raspberry Pi Foundation remains committed to recognizing and learning from their exceptional work worldwide.

Code Club in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

As AI rapidly transforms various aspects of our lives, some might question the necessity of learning to code. However, the Raspberry Pi Foundation firmly believes that learning to create with technology remains paramount. The way humans interact with computers is evolving, and Code Club offers a safe environment for young people to explore emerging technologies like AI.

In the coming weeks, the foundation will launch new Code Club projects designed to introduce young people to AI technologies, including generative AI, and provide additional support for club leaders and mentors in this area.

A Call to Action: Get Involved

The Raspberry Pi Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to Code Club's journey, particularly those who have dedicated their efforts to the recent changes. The foundation also expresses its appreciation for the valuable feedback and ideas provided by parents, teachers, mentors, and partners.

Code Club and CoderDojo were born from a shared vision to empower young people to be digital creators, not just consumers. The foundation's mission is to empower millions of young people to confidently navigate the digital world they are shaping.

The time to get involved with Code Club is now. Reach out to the foundation for support and guidance as you embark on your journey of empowering the next generation of creators.
