AntiX 23.2, codenamed “Arditi del Popolo,” is here, over seven months after its predecessor, version 23.1. This release marks another step forward for the Debian-based antiX Linux distribution, offering a systemd-free and elogind-free experience as always.
AntiX 23.2 comes in a variety of flavors, catering to different user needs and preferences. The distribution offers both 32-bit and 64-bit architecture options, with choices for sysVinit or runit versions, providing a streamlined experience across all variations.
The available flavors include:
antiX-full (1.8GB): This flavor includes four window managers—IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm, and herbstluftwm—along with the full LibreOffice suite. The x64 version comes equipped with two kernels: Legacy 5.10 and Modern 6.1.
antiX-base (1.2GB): Similar to the full version, this flavor includes four window managers but excludes additional applications like LibreOffice.
antiX-core (520MB): This version lacks a graphical user interface (GUI) but supports most wireless networks, making it an ideal starting point for users seeking a lightweight, customizable setup.
antiX-net (220MB): This bare-bones version provides just enough to get you connected (via wired internet) and ready to build a system from scratch.
For users opting for the core or net editions, establishing an internet connection may require manual commands, such as typing ifup eth0 or ifup eth1 as the root user.
AntiX 23.2 is built upon Debian 12 (Bookworm) and notably avoids systemd, elogind, and their dependencies. Instead, it utilizes eudev instead of udev, maintaining its systemd-free approach while ensuring seamless hardware compatibility.
The antiX-full x64 edition comes equipped with two custom kernels: 5.10 (Legacy) and 6.1 (Modern), providing users with flexibility to select their preferred kernel. However, after installation, the default kernel will be set to Modern 6.1, irrespective of the kernel used during the live session.
The antiX-full edition includes familiar productivity tools like LibreOffice 24.8.2 and Firefox ESR 128.3, while the antiX-base edition provides Seamonkey 2.53.19 for web browsing, ensuring a lightweight operation. Both editions include useful multimedia software such as XMMS for audio, Celluloid and MPV for video playback, and various other applications to meet diverse user needs.
The release continues to include popular and helpful applications such as Geany, Leafpad, Claws Mail, and CUPS for printing. Furthermore, several new in-house tools and applications have been added to enhance the antiX experience:
antiX TV and antiX Radio: Streaming tools for TV and radio enthusiasts.
Finder: A straightforward script to search for everything, from files to applications and web content.
antiX SAMBA manager: A script for managing Samba shares, accessible directly from the antiX Control Centre.
antiX equalizer toggle: A handy tool to activate or deactivate the PipeWire equalizer.
The antiX Control Centre app remains the central hub for managing system settings, offering a convenient way to perform almost any task. Included tools like Boot Repair, Package Installer, and Network Assistant further enhance its overall functionality.
In addition to the new features, many existing in-house scripts and applications have been refined, ensuring a smoother user experience.
