Popular Tiling Window Manager, Hyprland Released its Version 0.44

Hyprland, a popular tiling window manager, has just released version 0.44, packed with bug fixes and exciting new features aimed at enhancing the user experience. This update introduces a collection of handy command-line arguments, configuration options, and layout improvements, making Hyprland even more powerful and customizable.

One of the most notable additions is the introduction of new command-line arguments. The --version argument provides a quick and easy way to check the Hyprland binary version, eliminating the need for the hyprctl version command. Similarly, the --systeminfo argument simplifies the process of accessing system details. For users who prefer to customize their setup, the new HYPRLAND_CONFIG environment variable offers an alternative method for specifying a configuration file, alongside the existing --config command.

The Dwindle layout has received a significant boost in this release, with the introduction of the movetoroot layout message and the split_bias configuration option. These additions provide greater flexibility and control over window arrangements within the Dwindle layout.

Users now have more control over how their windows are managed, with the ability to configure auto-grouping for layouts. This allows for a personalized approach to window organization.

In terms of layer management, a new layer rule order has been implemented to facilitate a more structured arrangement of layers on the same plane. Hyprctl, the command-line tool for interacting with Hyprland, has also received enhancements, with new properties for monitors and workspacerules requests, as well as a fresh submap request.

Furthermore, Hyprland no longer overwrites the XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP environment variable, instead implementing a user check to ensure its integrity. This change ensures that the environment variable remains untouched, preserving user settings and configurations.

Another noteworthy update is the implementation of the single-pixel-buffer protocol, which aims to optimize graphics handling, resulting in smoother visual experiences.

As expected, the majority of this release focuses on addressing a wide range of bugs, resulting in a more stable and polished Hyprland experience. Among the key bug fixes:

  • Surface Calculations: Multiple fixes have been implemented to address surface UV and positioning calculations, leading to smoother resizing of Chromium windows and other applications.

  • Text Input: Improvements have been made for users who rely on Input Method Editors (IMEs), resolving various text-input issues and providing a smoother typing experience.

  • XWayland Handling: Fixes have been implemented to address issues with window placement and input translation when monitors are unplugged and reconnected.

  • Drag-and-Drop: Several edge cases related to drag-and-drop functionality have been resolved, resulting in a more consistent user experience.

  • Initial Cursor Warping: The bug causing unexpected cursor movements during initial cursor warping has been fixed.

  • General Stability: Numerous underlying codebase cleanups and crash fixes have been implemented, contributing to a more stable Hyprland experience.

These bug fixes are crucial in improving the overall user experience, ensuring a smoother and more reliable tiling window manager.
