X (formerly Twitter) is known for its diverse content, but sometimes you might encounter a warning label that reads “Potentially Sensitive Content.” This label pops up on certain tweets, even when you’re simply retweeting them. While X aims to protect users from potentially upsetting material, it can also limit the content you see. Fortunately, you can easily disable these warnings and customize your experience on X.

What is “Sensitive Content”?

X defines “sensitive content” as material that might contain violence or mature themes. Compared to platforms like Facebook, X generally adopts a more liberal approach to content moderation. While X prohibits extremely gruesome media, depictions of sexual violence, and illegal content, a wide range of material is allowed.

The platform’s default setting involves flagging such content with warnings like "This media may contain sensitive material," "This profile may contain potentially sensitive content," or "The following media contains potentially sensitive content.”

Removing the “Sensitive Content” Warning

You can disable sensitive content warnings within X’s privacy settings. This option is available on the Android app and on the X website, but currently unavailable on the iPhone and iPad app.

To turn off these warnings, follow these steps:

1. Visit the official X website.

2. Click the “More” button (three dots in a circle) located on the left side of the screen.

3. Select “Settings and Privacy” from the pop-up menu.

4. Choose “Privacy and Safety” from the options on the left, and then select “Content You See.”

5. Check the box next to “Display media that may contain sensitive content” to disable the warnings for tweets.

Enabling “Sensitive Content” in Search

Tweets containing sensitive content are usually hidden from search results. However, you can choose to view them by enabling the setting. As with the previous step, this setting is available on the X Android app and website but not on the iPhone or iPad app.

Here’s how to change the setting:

1. Visit the official X website.

2. Click More > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety > Content You See > Search Settings.

3. Uncheck the box next to “Hide Sensitive Content.”

Removing Warnings from Your Own Tweets

To prevent X from flagging your uploaded media as sensitive, you can adjust a setting within your privacy settings.

To change this setting:

1. Visit the X website or open the Android app.

2. Navigate to More > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety > Your Posts.

3. Ensure that the box next to “Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive” is unchecked.

This option is available on the website and Android app but not on the iPhone and iPad app.
