If you're uncomfortable with the information you share on TikTok, there are several settings you can adjust to enhance your privacy. Here's a step-by-step guide to securing your TikTok account.
1. Make Your Account Private
When your profile is public, anyone can view your profile and content, whether they have a TikTok account or not. By setting your account to private, only people you approve as followers can see your profile and content. So, to keep your content within your trusted circle of friends and family, you should make your account private.
To do this, tap the profile icon in the bottom right corner, then tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner. Select Settings and Privacy > Privacy, and turn on Private Account.
2. Turn Off Activity Status
TikTok's Activity Status feature allows your mutual followers, users you follow and who also follow you, to see a green dot on your profile, inbox, and message threads, indicating that you're active. They can also see when you were last active. For this feature to work, both you and your follower need to have it enabled.
So, if you prefer browsing videos without notifying your followers that you're online, you should disable this feature. This will prevent others from seeing your activity status, regardless of whether they have it enabled. To do this, go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy, and turn off Activity Status.
3. Restrict Who Can Mention, Tag, or Comment on Your Posts
TikTok allows you to have complete control over who can comment on your videos and offers additional settings for dealing with inappropriate comments. You can also restrict who can mention or tag you on the platform.
To manage comment settings, go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy > Comments. Tap Allow Comments From and select your desired option. You can enable the Filter All Comments button, which will only allow approved comments to appear on your videos. Additionally, you can filter out spam, inappropriate comments, and comments containing certain words.
To control who can mention or tag you, go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy > Mentions and Tags, tap Allow Mentions From, and select your desired option.
4. Make Your Followers List Private
By default, TikTok allows your followers to see your entire list of followers, including mutual friends and users they don't follow. This allows them to track who you follow, potentially leading to unwanted interactions. If one of your followers has malicious intent, they can also target those individuals.
To prevent this, you should make your followers list private. Go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy. Tap Followers List and select Only Me.
5. Control Who Can Send You DMs
Similar to tags, comments, and mentions, TikTok allows you to control who can send you direct messages. This feature helps avoid inappropriate messages from random followers. To make your DMs more private, go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy > Direct Messages. Tap Allow Direct Messages From and select your desired option.
You can also disable the Read Receipt button to prevent others from knowing when you've read their messages. Additionally, you can enable Safe Mode to filter messages with sensitive content. You can also turn on the 'Nudity Filter' to block explicit content and filter messages containing certain keywords.
6. Change Your Ad Preferences
TikTok displays ads tailored to your interests, but you can disable ads for specific interests if you wish. You can also mute certain advertisers if you don't want to see ads from them.
TikTok uses data collected by its ad partners from your activity on other apps and websites to show you personalized ads. TikTok calls this customized advertising. You can disable this targeted advertising to prevent the app from using your data outside of TikTok.
To adjust your ad preferences, tap the profile menu, tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner, and go to Settings and Privacy > Ads. Here, modify the settings as needed.
7. Disable Profile View History and Post View History
Enabling Profile View History allows you to see who has viewed your TikTok profile. It also lets your followers know when you have viewed their profile in the past 30 days. Similarly, Post View History allows your followers to see when you've viewed their posts and allows you to see when they've viewed your posts.
If you want to keep this information private, you can disable both features. To disable these features, go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy. Scroll down, select Post View, and turn off the toggle. Similarly, go to Profile View and turn off the toggle. Remember that doing so will also prevent you from tracking who has viewed your profile and posts.
8. Disable Location Services
Like many apps, TikTok uses your device's location to refine the content you see and tailor ads using that information. If you prefer not to share your exact location, you can disable location tracking permission. This will restrict TikTok to estimating your location using your device, carrier information, and IP address. You cannot completely disable location tracking.
To adjust Location Services settings, navigate to Settings and Privacy > Privacy > Location Services and select Never.
9. Disable Posting to Nearby Feed
The Nearby Feed is a personalized feed on TikTok that features content from local creators in your city, state, or province. Enabling the Post to Nearby Feed feature will make your posts appear in this feed for users in your area. You can disable this feature if you prefer to keep your content private from local users.

Often, we grant this permission without even reviewing the terms and conditions. Once authorized, these apps continue to track your data even if you no longer trust them.

To do this, go to Settings and Privacy > Security and Permissions > App and Website Permissions, and remove services you no longer want to share data with.
