Indonesian Government Will Create Anti Fake News Task Force for Regional Elections 2024

The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) has devised a novel approach to combatting fake news during the upcoming 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada).

Prabu Revolusi, Director General of Public Information and Communication (Dirjen IKP) at Kominfo, revealed plans for a dedicated task force to tackle Pilkada-related hoaxes.

"Currently, we're establishing a Joint Task Force, although the name hasn't been finalized," Prabu shared during a casual discussion at the Kominfo office.

This collaborative team will uniquely integrate potential regional head candidates into a newly developed system.

"They will be tagged, enabling the team to monitor their information directly," Prabu explained.

This approach is intended to expedite identifying and resolving hoaxes or disinformation related to these candidates.

"If hoaxes or disinformation are circulating about these regional leaders, they can be addressed more swiftly," he added.

Furthermore, Kominfo has forged agreements with relevant institutions such as the General Election Commission (KPU), the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), and media outlets.

Kominfo has also initiated collaborations with digital platforms to minimize the spread of fake news. Prabu mentioned that they had convened a gathering of critical digital platform players in Indonesia.

"We recently had a meeting with all the platforms. We will be deploying the system, possibly within the next week or two, so that hoaxes are actively mitigated by the platforms themselves. It won't solely rely on government action; platforms will actively tag hoaxes," he detailed.

The names of potential regional head candidates will be registered in platform databases, supplementing the existing KPU database.

These platforms will cross-reference their data with the list of candidates. Information about them will be subject to tighter scrutiny, according to Prabu.

"A dedicated team will monitor these hundreds of regional leadership candidates. This allows for a rapid response and swift handling of any disinformation or hoaxes," he emphasized.

"This method is unprecedented. Previously, hoaxes were primarily addressed through reporting and subsequent handling," Prabu concluded.

Kominfo's proactive stance on combating fake news during the upcoming Pilkada signifies a shift towards a more comprehensive and integrated approach. Creating a Joint Task Force, alongside collaborations with digital platforms, aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.

The tagging system and dedicated monitoring teams represent a significant innovation in the fight against hoaxes. Kominfo seeks to stay ahead of potential disinformation campaigns and empower voters with accurate information by directly integrating candidates into a centralized system and collaborating with platforms.

This initiative highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in safeguarding the integrity of elections. By leveraging the resources and expertise of both government and private entities, Kominfo strives to create a more robust and resilient information ecosystem, enabling citizens to make informed choices during the Pilkada.

Beyond immediate election-related benefits, the development of this new system and its integration with digital platforms lay the groundwork for a more sustainable approach to combating misinformation in the digital sphere. This could pave the way for a future where social media platforms play an active role in curbing the spread of hoaxes and promoting responsible online behavior.

Kominfo's efforts to combat fake news during the Pilkada represent a crucial step towards building a more informed and empowered citizenry. This proactive approach, driven by technology and collaboration, sets a precedent for future elections and underscores the vital role of information integrity in a democratic society.
