OBS Studio 31.0 Released its Beta Version

OBS Studio, the powerful, open-source, cross-platform, and free software for video recording and live streaming for Linux, macOS, and Windows, has entered public beta testing with version 31.0. This new release brings a plethora of exciting features and improvements, promising a more streamlined and feature-rich experience for users.

One of the standout additions in OBS Studio 31.0 is the integration of NVIDIA Blur Filter and Background Blur. These features empower users to enhance their video feeds with professional-looking visual effects, adding a layer of depth and sophistication. Additionally, preview scrollbars have been introduced to provide a more intuitive way to navigate through long scenes or sequences.

For users working with AJA devices, OBS Studio 31.0 introduces support for the v210 format, expanding capture capabilities and compatibility. Moreover, the integration of Amazon IVS (Interactive Video Streaming) service allows for seamless streaming directly to Amazon's platform, further broadening the reach and flexibility of OBS Studio.

Further enhancing the performance and efficiency of OBS Studio 31.0, the new version introduces QSV AV1 screen content coding. This enables users to utilize Intel's Quick Sync Video technology for efficient and high-quality screen recording, ideal for capturing gameplay, presentations, or tutorials.

Taking a step towards greater community integration, OBS Studio 31.0 adds support for first-party YouTube Chat features. This allows streamers to directly interact with their viewers through chat, fostering a more engaging and interactive streaming experience.

Linux users will appreciate the improvements specific to their platform. The latest version of OBS Studio includes enhanced screensaver inhibit functions when installing OBS Studio as a Flatpak app. This ensures uninterrupted recording and streaming, even during periods of inactivity. Additionally, the QSV encoder has been refined for improved performance and stability on Linux systems.

OBS Studio 31.0 also features changes to the Display and Window capture sources, now designed to avoid implicit capturing. This enhances control and clarity for users, ensuring they capture only the intended content. For those using Wayland, the built-in Automatic Scene Switcher has been disabled, and support for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS has been removed.

Moving to audio enhancements, OBS Studio 31.0 introduces a split of NVIDIA Audio Effects from Noise Suppression, with automatic migration of existing filters. This allows for finer control and customization of audio effects, enhancing the overall sound quality of recordings and streams.

The NVENC implementation has also undergone a significant refactoring in OBS Studio 31.0. This includes the introduction of split encoding, a new Target Quality VBR mode (CQVBR) that optimizes for quality while maintaining a target bitrate, and a custom options field for more granular control. The addition of B-Frames as reference further improves encoding efficiency and video quality.

Other noteworthy changes in OBS Studio 31.0 include a new warning message for the Window Capture source, which will be displayed when attempting to capture WinUI 3 applications with BitBlt. This helps users understand potential compatibility issues and ensure smooth capture. Additionally, macOS Virtual Camera error messages have been refined for improved clarity, and NVIDIA Kepler GPU support for the NVENC implementation has been removed to focus on newer and more efficient hardware.

The layout and positioning of scene items have been streamlined in OBS Studio 31.0, now using relative coordinates. This ensures consistent and reliable scene organization across different screen resolutions and display setups.

It is important to note that starting with OBS Studio 31.0, the code signing certificate has been updated. This might affect game capture compatibility with some anti-cheat solutions, potentially requiring adjustments on the user's end.

The first OBS Studio 31.0 public beta is available for download from the project's GitHub page as ready-to-use binaries for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS systems, as well as for Windows and macOS systems. However, users are advised to treat this as a pre-release version and refrain from using it in production environments.

OBS Studio 31.0 represents a substantial step forward for the popular streaming and recording software, offering a wealth of new features and improvements. With a focus on performance, user experience, and community engagement, this release promises to enhance the capabilities and versatility of OBS Studio for users across all platforms. As the public beta unfolds, users are encouraged to explore the new features, provide feedback, and contribute to the continuous evolution of this powerful open-source tool.
