openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 is Released

The openSUSE project has released openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0, the latest iteration of its secure and lightweight openSUSE Leap variant designed for containerized and virtualized workloads. This release builds upon its predecessor with several key enhancements, aimed at simplifying deployment and streamlining maintenance for developers and system administrators alike.

One of the most significant changes in openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 is the introduction of a self-install image. Replacing the traditional installer, this image simplifies the installation process by writing a preconfigured system image to the disk and then automatically enlarging the root partition. The openSUSE project recommends utilizing the "combustion," "ignition," or "jeos-firstboot" wizards for initial system setup.

"The availability of the 'openSUSE-Leap-Micro-6.0-*.iso' should not be mistaken as a traditional installation medium," explains the openSUSE project. "This is a Packages image, effectively functioning as an offline repository stored on a DVD."

Further bolstering its versatility, openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 is now available in new FDE (Full Disk Encryption), VMWare, and RealTime image formats. The inclusion of preinstalled cloud-init also enables its deployment as cloud images on popular platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Azure, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The release introduces several key improvements to the openSUSE Leap Micro ecosystem. Notably, openSUSE-repos are now preinstalled, making it easier for users to maintain repository definitions using a local RIS (Repository Index Service) implementation.

One of the key changes impacting maintenance workflows is the deprecation of the repo-sle-update repository, previously used for delivering updates in the openSUSE Leap Micro 5.x series. Updates are now managed through the repo-main repository, streamlining the process.

In a further effort to simplify and modernize operations, openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 introduces the product-composer utility, replacing the older product builder. This new utility allows the openSUSE maintenance team to leverage update information from the newly designed maintenance workflow of SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro 6.0.

The release also includes a new version of the GRUB2 bootloader, incorporating the BLS (Boot Loader Specification) for enhanced boot security and compatibility.

openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 is now available for download from the official website in various formats catering to different deployment scenarios. These formats include a Self-install Image, Preconfigured Image (raw), Fully Encrypted Disk Image (raw), Preconfigured Image (qcow), VMware image, and a Packages Image for both 64-bit and AArch64 (ARM64) systems.

These enhancements solidify openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0's position as a leading platform for containerized and virtualized deployments. The streamlined installation process, modernized maintenance workflow, and expanded image availability make it a compelling choice for developers and system administrators seeking a lightweight, secure, and versatile operating system.
